North Atlanta Dance Theatre recently held its annual welcome back party for new and returning company members. The company is comprised of our most promising and dedicated dancers. Dancers must be twelve years old with a minimum of one year on pointe to audition for company.

The event was presented by Director, Michael Garrison alongside his wife and co-founder, Kitty Garrison. Our NADT families were treated to a potluck dinner and all new company members received their jackets. Grande and Demi pairings were announced; a mentoring program between seasoned and new company members. And new head shots were up for display on the company wall. Exciting upcoming events and performances were discussed as well.

The welcome event is an important one…setting us off on the right footing for a successful company year. It is a social gathering where families can mingle and get to know one another outside of the hustle and bustle of getting students to and from the studio and theater for classes, rehearsals and performances. Nearly ninety attended the festive affair held at the North Atlanta Dance Academy studios. We are proud to have 31 members of the 2019-2020 North Atlanta Dance Theatre Company Season! Good luck dancers!

Sure it's still hot outside, but the final curtain has closed on summer by most accounts as the lazy days come to a close with students heading back to the books. But we are looking back on memories of summer with a song in our heart and rhythm in our soul...because we danced!

North Atlanta dance offered open summer camps for young and beginner dancers as well as summer intensives for those students wanting to sharpen their skills and take their passion to the next level. Director, Michael Garrison says summer months provide a great opportunity for dancers to make important strides forward. "When there is no school schedule to distract or take up time, the dancers can really improve their technique as well as explore other styles. Some students actually come in as beginners and are well on their way when we begin the (dance) school year in August."

More than three hundred students took advantage of as many as six weeks of camps this summer. The young and beginner classes encouraged students to learn and practice class structure, basic ballet, have fun and make new friends! Performances were held each Friday for friends and family to celebrate all the wonderful skills they obtained.
More advanced dancers focused on the summer intensive sessions held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. At the culmination of each three week period dancers participated in a fully choreographed, costumed performance combining contemporary and classical ballet. They performed these productions before more than eighty friends and family and were treated to a pot luck dinner afterwards.

Summer camps at NADA not only keep our dancers in tip-top shape and help them advance technically, they also provide employment for our valued instructors in what is typically as slow time for them. Fifteen teachers participated in the 2019 summer camp season. Thank you!

The idea was the brainchild of Stephanie Magaldi, Development Director for NADT. Stephanie is the daughter of NADT's Artistic Director, Michael Garrison NADT Co-Founder, Kitty Garrison. Stephanie had the idea many months ago and approached Garrison. Spring is an extremely busy time for the dance theatre but once Garrison sat down with Wayne Baughman, Maestro for Johns Creek Symphony Orchestra, the creative wheels began to turn and a beautiful performance began to take shape.

We sat down with Michael and Wayne for a conversation about how this production came to be, what the audience can expect to see and why this type of collaboration is imperative to bringing the arts to center stage in John Creek and its surrounding communities.

We are so delighted to share with you some really exciting news about one of our amazing young dancers! Eighth grade student, Olivia McBain will be competing in Youth America Grand Prix Finals in New York in April. Olivia competed at the local level placing second in her classical variation, Odalisque from Le Corsiare and she landed in the top twelve for her contemporary variation, Orchid by NADA instructor, Christina Simkovich. As a result of her tremendous work she will bring both solos to the stage in New York!

Olivia will be in New York for two weeks as part of a once in a lifetime, jam packed opportunity! She will be part of the Gala production at the Lincoln Center. After she competes with both solos, she will attend master classes for an opportunity to earn scholarships to train with some of the biggest ballet companies in the U.S.

Olivia is an eighth grade student at South Forsyth Middle School. She has been since dancing since the age of five, attending NADA's Pre-Professional Summer Intensive Program for the past two years, performing in three summer productions; Sleeping Beauty's Wedding, Swan Lake, and Don Quixote. Additionally she spent time last summer attending MODAS 2018 Summer Intensive in New Mexico on scholarship. This summer she'll be attending the Boston Ballet Summer Intensive on scholarship for five weeks.

Olivia's parents, both dancers, are so grateful the training, love and support provided by NADA and our community. "...all of her wonderful friends at NADA feel more like family who have been by her side in support and encouragement year after year. The journey is even sweeter when you get to share it with great friends," says mom, Claudia McBain.

Olivia and her family wish to send heartfelt and gracious thanks to the following people for helping her reach the highest heights and achieve her biggest goals:

Kai Shlomi has been dancing since the age of three! We are delighted she will be dancing the part of the Sugar Plum Fairy in North Atlanta Dance Theatre's 2018 presentation of The Nutcracker.

We asked Kai to answer a few questions about her performance:

What are you most excited about in this year's staging of The Nutcracker?
This year I am most excited to be performing as the Sugar Plum Fairy alongside my sister, Nik, who will be performing as Clara. As a senior, it feels special to be wrapping up my 11th Nutcracker with NADA, while sharing the stage with my younger sister.

Tell us what dancing this role means to you?
This is a role I have been aiming for since I was a little girl watching the Nutcracker for the first time. To truly be performing this dream role is so surreal and rewarding.

Why do you think this ballet has become such a holiday tradition?
I believe (this) ballet has become such a holiday tradition because it showcases one of the most well known seasons of the year in an art form which brings joy and holiday spirit to audience members. Ballet encourages emotion and happiness among viewers, especially through holiday classics such as The Nutcracker.

Why should people choose our show over others in the Atlanta area?
People should choose our show over others in Atlanta because we have by far one of the most high quality Nutcracker productions in the area. From the pristine costuming to the large venue, the exquisite staging, and the beautiful dancing, our Nutcracker performance is the best way to get into the holiday spirit!

Moriah Jones has been dancing for ten years. She will be dancing Dew Drop Fairy, Snow and Side Arabian in North Atlanta Dance Theatre's 2018 presentation of The Nutcracker.

We asked Moriah to answer a few questions about her role in this year's delightful staging of the holiday classic:

What are you most excited about in this year's staging of The Nutcracker?
I am most excited for the first scene of second act.

Tell us what dancing these roles means to you?
This Nutcracker, I will be performing my first lead roll in a ballet performance, and this will probably be the last time I will perform in the Nutcracker as I will be transitioning to college next year.

Why do you think this ballet has become such a holiday tradition?
I believe the music in this ballet is why it is so well known and liked today. The ballet starts with a Christmas scene and is colorful and bright making it perfect to bring an audience into the holiday spirit.

Why should people choose our show over others in the Atlanta area?
Families should choose NADT Nutcracker over other Nutcracker shows because it is a high quality ballet and more affordable than most professional performances.

The holidays can be hectic and frenzied; we encourage you to BEGIN this special season with us. NADT will present The Nutcracker at Infinite Energy Theater November 9th-11th.

This year’s presentation boasts exciting additions to the battle scene and new twists to Clara’s dream.

NADT founder and Artistic Director, Michael Garrison describes his vision; “North Atlanta Dance Theatre’s Nutcracker is light and fun for the entire family. Some productions can be quite dark. I did not want a spooky Nutcracker. Our production is well structured in its narrative and quality of choreography.”

Garrison explains the importance of bringing the Nutcracker to the stage each year. “It is a tradition that encompasses the entire dance world and has become a big part of our country’s holiday tradition!”

NADT Presents the Nutcracker at Infinite Energy Theater:

November 9th 7:30 p.m.

November 10th 2:30p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

November 11th 2:30 p.m.

Tickets Are On Sale Now: www.northatlantadance.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3002492053879200576.post-6870515618057466422018-07-23T12:05:00.001-07:002018-07-27T13:23:54.526-07:00Hit the Links..."Fore" a Great Cause!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Get ready for an afternoon of fun and fundraising! It's time for our annual NADTee It Up Golf Tournament.

As you know, NADT is a non profit organization. We delight in teaching young people the art of dance and bringing their talents to the stage through live performances. We hold steadfast to the belief that dance is a touchstone to so many other strengths and skills. Our dancers graduate well rounded and confident and ready to face the world with an appreciation for art. But, as a nonprofit, we cannot do this wonderful work without support from our parents and our community.

We rely on your support to make the magic happen! So we're asking everyone to consider signing up to be part of NADTee It Up! The event takes place September 23rd at 2 p.m. at Bear's Best in Suwanee, Georgia. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

This year's Event Chair, Dan McBain is a former professional dancer and his daughter, Olivia is a rising eighth grader and company dancer with NADT. Dan says this event is a wonderful opportunity to include fathers. "I think it is probably difficult for many fathers to fully understand the connection that their child has with dance and the benefits that came come from it. Often we hear about the injuries, personal struggles, disappointments," says McBain. But he adds, there are so many inspiring outcomes from the discipline and the joy of dance.

Dan explains, "the dedication it takes to attempt to perfect the dance and to show up even when you would rather not, the perseverance it takes to stay with it even when your mind and body want to give up and the ability to work with others to create something bigger and greater than you could have ever done by yourself makes our children better and stronger." McBain believes these life lessons are, "priceless and something any father can appreciate."

NADTee It Up will host 35 foursomes. Anyone can join; fathers, uncles, grandparents, neighbors.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our tireless creative team has been hard at work planning what is sure to be a marvelous afternoon. Golfers will be greeted by stilt walkers and then handed goody bags. Refreshments will be available including a celebratory NADT 20th Anniversary bottle of bubbly. Vendors like Pasta Vino and Taco Mac will be providing food along the course. Additionally, Titos and Patron will be serving drinks and there will be raffle prizes. The tournament will conclude with a fire performance, hors d oeuvres, awards and a cash bar.

There are various levels of sponsorship should you be interested. The cost for a foursome is $500.00 and individuals are $145.

We would be so grateful for your time and support. Please call us 770-772-8000 or email: northatlantad658@bellsouth.net for registration and sponsorship information
Spring is such a wonderful and often bittersweet time of
year. Young dancers, whom we’ve watched grow
from young children to accomplished young adults, leave us to graduate and move
on to exciting futures. Some of them take all the poise and dedication they’ve
learned from dance and parlay that into wonderful careers. Others choose to
continue their practice. Two NADA and NADT Alumni Emily Patterson and Bridget
West have been cast in some pretty incredible ballets as they extend their
education at the University of South Carolina. We had a moment recently to
catch up with Emily who tells us all about What They’re Up to Now!

Emily Patterson:

On April 15th, Bridget and I had the chance to perform in
the University of South Carolina’s annual Ballet Stars of New York performance.
Every year, our teacher, Stacey Calvert (former New York City Ballet soloist)
invites several current Principal dancers from NYCB to perform iconic
Balanchine ballets with us. The fact that we even get to perform these ballets
at all is special, because the Balanchine Trust has so many rules about who can
perform them, who can set them, and how the production runs as a whole. This
year, we performed “Allegro Brillante” and “Stars and Stripes,” two incredibly
difficult but well known Balanchine works. I was honored to dance in Allegro
Brillante, a fifteen-minute ballet danced by four corps couples and a principal
couple, which was danced by Ashley Bouder and Jared Angle. Though it was one of
the most challenging ballets I’ve ever danced, it was absolutely a dream to
perform. The second work in the show was commissioned by Sara Mearns for NYCB,
titled “The Bright Motion” and choreographed by the renowned Justin Peck. This
one was a phenomenal duet between Sara and Robbie Fairchild, and it was
thrilling to watch. Finally, the showstopper was the famous “Stars and Stripes”
Ballet, set to the famous Sousa music, arranged by Hershey Kay. It was
especially thrilling to hear it played by our live orchestra! The ballet is
split into five sections, or “Regiments,” as Balanchine named them, and Bridget
and I both danced in the opening section— usually called the Short Girl
Regiment. Of the thirteen girls in that section, we actually danced right next
to each other (just like old days!). Following our regiment were the Tall Girls
and the Men, with the men’s regiment leader role danced by NYCB’s Anthony
Huxley, an incredibly exciting and beautifully technical dancer to watch. Then,
Sara Mearns and Robbie Fairchild took the stage again for an exhilarating pas
de deux as the Liberty Bell and El Capitan. The ballet culminated with all 41
dancers on stage together. We enjoyed every moment of this performance!

recover from injuries and the science behind physical activity. “So somewhere
down the road, I’d like to pursue that as well... but not until I’ve had my
fill of performing,” says Emily.
Please join us in celebrating two very talented young ladies, sisters Kai and Nik Shlomi! These two marvelous dancers competed this spring in the Youth Grand Prix in New York City.

Here's more about the awesome experience in their own words:

Tell me about the dance routine.
The dance routine was about two mimes who had contrasting personalities and constantly bickered with each other until finally they resolved their problems.

Why do you feel it was so special? What story does it tell?
This piece was inspired by Marcel Marceau and his famous mime characters. As sisters, we were really able to connect with each other and put our history together into the piece. Additionally, we are Jewish and Marceau used miming to stay alive during the Holocaust, a very devastating period, so our religious connection reasoned with our dedication of this dance to him.

How did you feel when you found out you were bound for NY?
When our amazing coach, mentor, and teacher, Ms. Stacey Slichter, told us the exciting news, we both started screaming with joy and had tears of happiness. It was so unexpected and the thought of going to New York for the YAGP finals was one of the most amazing feelings ever.

Tell me about NY.
While in NY we not only spent lots of time dancing, but we also had a great time getting to meet talented dancers from all over the world. Sharing our experiences with them made our time in the big apple even more special. The food in New York was delicious and spending our evenings in Times Square was so surreal.

What was your favorite part of performing at YAGP?
Our favorite part of performing at YAGP was having the opportunity to lighten the moods of the audience members and get a good laugh out of them. It was also a very rewarding experience to dance at both the Peter Jay Sharp Symphony Orchestra Theatre and the David H. Koch Theatre at the Lincoln Center. Not only this, but shortly after our performance, we took the subway from the theatre to Times Square and performed for pedestrians in the big city.

What was your favorite part of being in NYC? Had you been before?
Our favorite part of being in NYC was being around people with the same interests as us in a such a magical city. The billboards, the food, and the amazing respect for the art of dance in NYC made our experience much more special. Getting to spend time with our Mom and Ms. Stacey in the city was so enjoyable. We have been to NYC in years past, but this was our first time in the city for a dance related event.

How did you place?
Although we did not place in the top 12 out of hundreds of ensembles, our scores reflected an excellent performance and the judges mentioned that they truly enjoyed the piece. Being a duet and making it to the YAGP NYC 2018 Finals is already such an amazing achievement. Seeing what the audience had to say later on was an even more rewarding accomplishment and we will cherish it forever. If we went back and did it again, we would not change a thing!

What is your next big goal?
Our next goal is to continue our dance training and charm the hearts of many more future audiences!

We owe all the Guild members a debt of gratitude for their tireless and impassioned work.

(L) Ashley Wilmouth and (R) Susan Fisher Guild Co-Presidents

The NADT Parent Guild is the collective parent body of North Atlanta Dance Theatre. Its mission is to promote parental participation in the life of NADT. The PG is led by a president and two co-presidents. Ronnie Shlomi serves as president, Ashley Wilmouth and Susan Fisher serve as co-presidents. The Parent Guild provides a strong voice for the parent community and works in partnership with the NADA/NADT administration. Leadership works together to embrace the mission, vision and goals of NADT.

Each officer has children who are company dancers. And in addition to supporting their own dancers, they perform myriad important duties behind the scenes that benefit everyone.

From overseeing all aspects of the PG's various committees to planning and scheduling activities for the season these ladies are relentless in their efforts.

One of the most important items the Guild is tasked with is fundraising. Money raised enables activities to enhance the social spirit of company members and families through welcome parties, themed t-shirts, holiday festivities, cast and end of year parties.

The PG also welcomes new family members, answering any questions and guiding them along the way. Through regular meetings, the guild provides a forum for dialogue, addressing parents needs and concerns. Parents also use these meetings to suggest ideas and keep abreast of upcoming events and activities.

Like any organization, we would not be such a success without the support of parent volunteers. We extend our most heartfelt appreciation to the Parent Guild officers and the many parent volunteers who make it all look so easy. Thank you for putting your Passion in Motion!

As we prepare to honor mothers and all who mother, let us not forget the woman who embodies this quote by C.S. Lewis each and every day, Miss Kitty Garrison.

Always professional and impeccably dressed, she graciously manages all the many moving parts necessary for the success of NADA/NADT. In addition to greeting parents and dancers, she takes care of all administrative duties. She also creates schedules, organizes recital shows and orchestrates costume purchases and distribution to various classes. She also reserves theater spaces, backdrops and hires dancers for NADT. Whew! Those are just a few of the many, many hats she wears so dazzlingly well!

But perhaps her most important role is that of a mother figure to all of our wonderful young dancers. You will hear her tell parents and dancers alike she is their second mother! She will be stern when necessary and always encouraging; just like any mother!

Being a mom isn't always easy. "The most challenging thing I believe is to have to explain to a parent why they're dancer is not ready for the accelerated program or not ready to go on to point-and suggest what they can do to make it happen and do it in a way that they are in agreement and not disappointed or upset," Kitty explains. But as any mom will tell you, the rewards outweigh the difficult moments. Kitty adds, "The most rewarding thing for me is seeing a student show improvement in their technique and see how proud they are of that achievement."

Here are a few other things you might no know about our Miss Kitty:

Inspiration: My grandmother. She was always a strong person but always a lady and always there for me throughout my life

Favorite quote "Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value." Albert Einstein

Favorite Film: Somewhere in Time

Favorite Flower: Tulip, Lily and Rose

Here's to you on Mother's Day, Miss Kitty. Thank you for all you do!
Regardless of whether they continue dance or not we are confident studying this craft has given them the poise, confidence, discipline and grace that will embolden them to soar to the highest heights in this big, beautiful world. Keep a song in your heart and a rhythm in your toes and always...put Passion in Motion!
When asked last fall what Daniel Gray hoped for by training for competition this year, he said he wanted to be a better dancer. His mother, Suzy explains, “Thanks to Mr. G, Tatiana, Stacey, and the entire NADA family, he has found his place in the joy of dance.”

Suzy says they are grateful for all that NADA has done to teach Daniel classical technique and give him an environment where he can thrive and do what brings him such happiness these last two years.

Because of the wonderful opportunities he has been given and the incredible teachers that have invested in him, Daniel was able to compete in the pre-competitive division at YAGP in January with the Giselle Peasant Pas male variation where he placed in the top 12.

Daniel was also given the opportunity to compete at UBC in March with that same variation and received UBC Platinum, placing 3rd overall in the pre-competitive division. In addition, he was part of the First Steps ensemble where they received UBC Platinum, placing 1st overall in the pre-competitive ensemble division. At UBC, Daniel was awarded a full scholarship to the Sarasota Ballet Summer Intensive program.

In April, Kate Parker, the bestselling and award winning photographic author of Strong Is the New Pretty, shot Daniel at NADA for her new project Boy Strong. In Kate’s words, “I worry about our boys. The definition of what is acceptable for them is so narrow. It is time to expand that. Time for change.” You can see Daniel’s picture as well as her portfolio on her website. She is wrapping up this project in early summer and will release it through Workman Publishing.

Suzy, “all we feel is gratitude for NADA and all they have given Daniel!”

The dancers who performed in NADT's 2018 staging of Swan Lake poured their souls into the stunning achievement. They left everything on the stage and it was nothing short of spectacular.

In an effort to illustrate the long, rigorous hours of rehearsal, young filmmaker, Parker McBain produced this video that takes us on a journey from Studio to Stage. If you didn't know, Parker is the older brother of NADT student, Olivia McBain. Parker, a former dancer himself, is a senior at the College of Motion Picture Arts at Florida State University. He will receive his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree this May and plans to pursue a career in animation. You might also know his parents as they regularly volunteer at NADA/NADT and have in recent years portrayed Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum in NADAs production of The Nutcracker.

Parker was moved to take on this project for his sister. Olivia has been dancing at NADA since she was six and this is her first year as a company member of North Atlanta Dance Theatre. She performed as a swan and Neapolitan Dancer in the production of Swan Lake.

Parker has quite a bright future ahead of him. He's already earned praise as an award winning documentary and animation filmmaker. It is with heartfelt gratitude we thank him for taking the time to capture this amazing adventure for NADT!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3002492053879200576.post-65017879243732380302018-03-31T13:15:00.000-07:002018-04-12T15:36:33.747-07:00Bet Ya Didn't Know...Some Dancers are Inventors Too! North Atlanta Dance Academy is proud to congratulate one of its own on a big win at a recent invention competition hosted by Georgia Tech.

Darby Graham, a seven year old student at NADA recently won the "People's Choice Award" at the Georgia Tech InVentures state-wide event. Darby has been dancing at NADA for seven years but her mother says she's always loved invention. She blended her passions for dance and ingenuity to develop the award winning, Travel On Foot Roller.

"She got the idea for the roller from leaving dance with sore and aching feet and hearing her classmates complain about their feet. Her gifted class at school had an invention project this year and so her wheels started turning," explains Darby's mother Kacie.

The Travel On Foot Roller can be attached to a cabinet so you can roll your aching feet while brushing your teeth or getting ready for school or dance. It is also portable so you can take it along with you to the studio or when you travel.

A lot of work went into transforming an idea into a product you might soon be able to purchase. Darby drew out a sketch of what she wanted the roller to look like and how it should work. Then she and her grandfather went to a hardware store and together purchased the items she needed. With guidance from her grandfather, Darby went about making her dream a tangible reality.

Kacie says Darby worked with her "Papa" to make her prototype. "Darby did it all by herself. With his instruction and construction background it made for a great team."

Darby knows dancers will love the product and it's also great for people who suffer from plantar fasciitis. Darby is seeking a patent and hoping to one day sell her Travel On Foot Roller in stores. And this fourth grader isn't stopping there...her mom says Darby has more inventions in the works!

A note from Mr. G as he looks back at NADTs spectacular production of Swan Lake:

NADT's 2018 production of Swan Lake was a stunning success! The corps de ballet consisting of student dancers performed as a professional unit. Their timing was right on and their formations and poses were consistently clean and in place!

Erin Blair, returning to perform the dual roles of Odette / Odile was compellingly sympathetic as Odette and conversely deviously conspiratorial as Odile! Her technique was unwavering! Her Prince Sigfried, Norbert Nireiwcz, supported her with great sensitivity. His acting and solo variation exhibited the skill of a seasoned professional! Raul Peinada as Baron Von Rothbart was stunningly evil! His technique was as strong as his character! It was truly amazing as the
audience lept to their feet at the end of each performance!

Congratulations, NADT!

Thanks! Michael
In the days leading up to the fabulous production of Swan Lake, some of our NADT dancers enjoyed a visit to Forsyth County's Brookwood Elementary School. The dancers, in costume, performed a few numbers from Swan Lake for the students during their lunch perios. What a spectacular treat for these youngsters! Students were so excited many of them posed for pictures and asked for autographs.

We all know Miss Stacey as NADA's talented, sought after instructor but she is so much more dynamic than that and the depths of her passion for dance take her beyond the classroom walls in myriad ways.

While she is an accomplished and seasoned dancer in her own right, she never stops stretching herself to new heights.

For example, Stacey has been working with the esteemed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater since 2006 when she was asked to teach a one week summer session for its company dancers. That parlayed into a tremendous opportunity to teach each summer at the theater's New York studios. Now each year when AADT travels to Atlanta, they reach out to Stacey to serve as a guest instructor. And in fact, Stacey just finished a session with their dancers.

As a
professional dancer for over 20 years, it is always nice to surround
yourself with other professionals who have persevered through this art
form. Also, I have been drawn to this amazing
company since I was 10 years old. At that young age I instantly fell in
love with the company’s athleticism and artistry. I think the best
opportunity of all though, has been the friendships I have made with
some of the dancers in the company.

For Stacey, art is constantly moving, changing shape and growing. It is her steadfast belief there is "no room for complacency" in this art form. Therefore constantly challenging herself and pushing beyond her comfort zone is what makes her such a force on stage and in the classroom.

Instructors, as well as dancers, need to always explore outside their
comfort zones. This is where the true creativity and mastery are found.
Teachers are still students. We are always learning, always discovering,
always adapting.

You might question how these experiences with other dance theaters benefit NADT. For Stacey it is all about setting an example. When she was first asked to guest teach in 2006, despite having a long and impressive resume, she nearly allowed nerves to get the best of her; she nearly turned it down. A mentor encouraged her saying she would always regret giving into her fears of failure.

I heard her words and knew
she was right! I can’t imagine the what ifs
if I had let my fear get in the way. To this day, I feel the fear and do
it anyway. It’s the only way for an artist to thrive.
Since graduating from NADT in 2014, Burt has been working towards her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. This staging of Swan Lake teams pupil with teacher as Mr. Garrison teams with Miss Burt to bring a dream into fruition. “This is very exciting for me personally because it is the culmination of the ultimate mission of NADA/NADT, the opportunity to train dancers in our school and company and then to hire them to perform as professionals,” Garrison explains. This will be Burt's professional debut. "This opportunity has been very special to me, as it has always been my absolute dream role. ...I’m thankful that the Garrisons and all my teachers have supported me to dance this role, as it is one of the most demanding in ballet repertoire," Burt said.

Demanding might be a slight understatement as Burt will be dancing the dual roles of Odette and Odile. While NADTs presentation follows the ballet's original choreography, there are subtle changes of expression which command Burt to expose darker places within her as yet untapped on stage. Explains Burt, "I’ve had to dig deeper into my own experiences and extract particular emotions that could help me relate to the characters I am portraying. It takes time and experience to truly embody the role. I want the audience to wonder about the Black Swan, as she is mysterious and darkly mesmerizing and to feel the agony and betrayal of the White Swan when the Prince mistakenly swears his love to (her). I want the audience to be right there with me and to feel these powerful emotions."

And Burt says taking us there will require everything she's got physically and psychologically. "The choreography alone requires pure strength and commitment, and I’ve learned to trust myself and my body with the pressures of demanding physicality. I’ve drawn inspiration from a multitude of classical principal dancers so that I can develop my very own White and Black Swan," says Burt.

It is not lost on Burt that she is a role model for all the younger NADA/NADT dancers. Hundreds of students have watched her over the years and are waiting with great anticipation to see her performance. To the young and talented dancing alongside her or sitting captivated in the audience, Burt has a message: " I hope they understand how important it is to be individual and your authentic self, and to know that there is always something special about you."

Do not miss this bold and rousing presentation of Swan Lake...for there is magic at play.
It's that time of year again at NADA, the excitement and beauty of The Nutcracker and the Holiday Season is behind us. The rigors of instruction have amplified and the cold, damp winter is wearing on us all. So how about some theatrical beauty to match those first buds of spring just starting to burst forth? Maybe some little black bags with gold piping? You know what I'm talking about...costumes are arriving.

Mrs. Kitty Garrison has been busy labeling and sorting all of this season's gorgeous recital costumes. Look for her to visit your weekly classes soon. We've had a sneak peek and as always NADA dancers will be visions of beauty and grace as they take to the stage in May.
